Regular readers of science journal “Nature” (I’m sure many of you are subscribers) will remember an article back in January of this year where geneticist Paolo Pandolfi named a cancer-causing gene “Pokemon.” The gene, part of the POK family (see what they did there?), apparently encodes proteins and alters genes, giving the patient cancer. “Pokemon causes cancer” was never going to be the kind of headline that fit with Nintendo’s super happy fun-stuff image, so the journal was not surprised to have The Pokemon Company USA’s lawyers knocking on the door, asking them to stop naming terminal diseases after their prized IP. Thankfully the scientists agreed, giving the gene the less copyright infringing name of “Zbtb7”. source cex.co.uk
