Only months after Nokia announced that it would be stopping production of the N-Gauge, bankruptcy has led to the death of another portable contender, the Gizmondo. Tiger Telematics, the makers of the ill-fated machine have just gone into administration, with many retailers discontinuing console from their product range. This is unlikely to come as a surprise to anyone – Even Microsoft were keen to distance themselves from the product after Tiger Telematics started to claim that they were closer bed fellows than they were. Billed as a portable Xbox from the outset, the Gizmondo never lived up to those boastful claims, instead revealing itself to be a cumbersome piece of hardware with neither the power or looks of the PSP nor the innovation and software of the DS. Cursed with a frankly insane name, the console never managed to appeal to anyone outside a small group of hardcore gadget collectors and emulation hungry gamers. Curiously, aside from emulation, many believed the devices main allure was in its out-of-the-box GPRS abilities. While it handled a perfectly sufficient rendition of the feature, the initially steep price and complete lack of software meant that those with trouble finding their way around opted for the cheaper option instead - An A-Z. Those with a morbid curiousity for dead things will still be able to pick them up at Cex. Their limited life span may make them collectable some day... are.H Cex Towers
