In summery:
Palastein millitants kidnap Israeli soldier, kill 2 others
Israel invades Gaza Stripe
Several days later, a millitant group know as Hezbollah (part of the goverment of Lebanon) kidnap 2 Israeli soldeirs, kill 3 others and then start firing rockets into northern Isreal, most notably into the city of Hafia.
Israel invades Lebanon, takes control of southern Lebanon and begins continuous airstrikes across Lebanon, knocking out power, water, roads, bridges, etc.
Due to the fact Hezbollah terrorists are hidden in densely populated areas, Israel begins airstriking cites and causes many civilain deaths in the process. This also disrupts aid from reaching trapped civilians.
Growing UN pressure for Israel to halt its offensive is disrupted as the French side with Hezbollah but America sides with Israel, Britain, while never offically announcing it, sides with Isreal. US and France thrash out terms for a UN resalution, which Israel grudgingly accepts, as does already beaten down Hezbollah.
Fradgile truce ensues which takes us upto where we are now. Iran, who supplied Hezbollah with weapons, hails the truce as a victory over Israel.
The chances of this truce lasting much more than a week are about a snowballs chances in hell. Frankly I side with Israel. When you have a group of people who want to deny you your very right to exist, what the hell else are you meant to do? Negotiate? Just sit by while your northern cites are bombarded with rockets? Whether you agree with Israel being there or not, in this instance they were provoked and provoking one of the worlds best fighting forces is gonna result in someone getting their arses kicked. People need to look at the big picture. There's no place for groups with the mentality of Hezbollah in todays world. Their thinking and logic is still living in the 15th centery. They need to join us in 2006.
Thats the short of it with my personal view at the end.
